What are Cockroaches

Cockroaches are ancient insects. They’ve survived on earth for over 200 million years. Roaches run fast on legs made for speed, and with 5-segmented tarsi. Most are nocturnal and spend their days resting deep within tight-fitting cracks or crevices.

Roache are flat and have oval bodies. Cockroaches use chewing mouthparts to scavenge on organic materials.

Three species of cockroaches that are commonly found in Pennsylvania

  • Oriental cockroach– Can grow in length up to 1 inch long, these cockroaches are dark, and oily black in color. They tend to be found in the most dark and moist areas of your homes.
  • The American cockroach– They are a large cockroach and can be 1-1/2 inches in length and are reddish brown in color. They prefer warm moist areas inside of homes.
  • The German cockroach– These are a smaller cockroaches and grow in length between ¼-5/8 of an inch in length; they are light brown or tan in color with dark stripes down their head. They like to live in small, tight areas where moisture is present.
