Signs of Ants in Your Home

Spotting the problem early makes treatment faster and cheaper. Call us if you notice any of these:

  • Visible trails of small ants along counters, baseboards, and windowsills
  • Ants appearing around pet food, sinks, and pantry shelves
  • Small soil mounds along sidewalks, driveways, and the foundation
  • Winged ants indoors in spring or after rain
  • Ants nesting in wall voids, insulation, or potted plants

Our Ant Treatment Process

  1. Step 1

    Identification

Odorous house ants, pavement ants, and pharaoh ants each respond to different baits. We identify the species before choosing a product.

  2. Step 2

    Baiting

Slow-acting gel and granular baits let workers carry the active ingredient back to the queen, collapsing the colony over one to two weeks.

  3. Step 3

    Barrier

An exterior perimeter treatment around the foundation, entry points, and trails keeps new colonies from re-invading.

How to Identify Ants — and Why DIY Falls Short

Most kitchen ants in NEPA are one of two species. Pavement ants are small and dark, nest under sidewalks and slabs, and push little soil mounds up through cracks. Odorous house ants are similar in size but give off a rotten-coconut smell when crushed and nest in wall voids and under floors. Pharaoh ants — tiny and yellow — show up in heated buildings and are notorious for budding into many colonies when sprayed. Correct identification decides which bait will actually work.

Ants are the most common reason NEPA homeowners call a pest control company each spring. Pavement ants push up soil between sidewalk cracks and trail indoors for sweets and grease; odorous house ants — the ones that smell like rotten coconut when crushed — nest in wall voids and under floors and can split into multiple colonies when sprayed. Both are harmless to the structure but relentless once they find a food source inside.

The critical mistake in DIY ant control is reaching for a repellent spray. Killing the trail you see does nothing to the colony, and with species like odorous house ants it triggers budding — one nest becomes three. Effective control uses the ants' own behavior against them: slow-acting baits that workers share with the queen and brood, eliminating the colony from the inside over days rather than hours.

Our ant service starts with species identification, because bait preferences differ — sugar-feeders ignore protein baits and vice versa, and preferences shift through the season. We then combine interior baiting with an exterior perimeter treatment and practical exclusion advice: sealing utility gaps, trimming vegetation off the siding, and fixing the moisture spots ants nest near. Most single-family infestations resolve within two weeks; recurring quarterly service keeps new colonies from re-establishing.

Ant Control — FAQ

Why do ants keep coming back every spring?

Colonies overwinter in soil and wall voids and re-forage as soon as temperatures rise. A spring perimeter treatment plus baiting breaks the cycle instead of chasing trails all summer.

Are ant baits safe around kids and pets?

We place baits in tamper-resistant stations and in cracks and voids out of reach. Modern gel baits use very low concentrations of active ingredient, and we explain placement before we leave.

How are carpenter ants different from regular ants?

Carpenter ants are much larger, nest in wood, and can damage structures — they are treated as a separate service. The small ants in your kitchen are usually pavement or odorous house ants.
