Signs of Stink Bugs in Your Home
Spotting the problem early makes treatment faster and cheaper. Call us if you notice any of these:
- Shield-shaped brown insects gathering on sunny south and west walls in fall
- Bugs appearing around windows, lights, and attic spaces on warm winter days
- A cilantro-like odor when bugs are crushed or disturbed
- Buzzing clusters at window screens in September and October
- Overwintering bugs emerging indoors in spring
Our Stink Bug Treatment Process
- Step 1
Timing
The window is late August through September — treatment must land before the mass migration indoors, not after bugs are already in the walls.
- Step 2
Barrier Treatment
A residual application to siding, soffits, and around windows and doors kills bugs as they land and probe for entry points.
- Step 3
Exclusion
We identify the gaps they use — attic vents, window frames, utility penetrations — and seal or screen the worst offenders.

How to Identify Stink Bugs — and Why DIY Falls Short
The brown marmorated stink bug is shield-shaped, about three-quarters of an inch, marbled brown-gray, with distinctive white bands on the antennae and alternating light edges along the abdomen. It is often confused with native brown stink bugs and squash bugs, but the banded antennae give it away. They do not reproduce indoors — every bug in your house flew in from outside in the fall, which is why exterior timing is everything.
The brown marmorated stink bug is an Asian import that found Pennsylvania very much to its liking — Penn State Extension tracks it as one of the state's signature nuisance invaders, and NEPA is squarely in its range. The insects are harmless to people and structures: they do not bite, breed indoors, or damage the home. The problem is sheer numbers. On warm September afternoons, hundreds gather on sun-warmed siding and then slip into attics, wall voids, and window frames to overwinter.
Once inside, they are difficult to remove. Vacuuming helps but risks the odor that gives them their name, and crushing them can stain surfaces. On warm midwinter days, confused individuals emerge around lights and windows all season long. The only reliable strategy is prevention: stop them at the exterior before they get in.
Our stink bug program is a timed exterior service. A residual barrier applied to siding, eaves, and entry points in early fall intercepts the invasion as it happens, and we combine it with practical exclusion — screening attic and gable vents, weatherstripping, sealing window-frame gaps. Homes with heavy prior-year pressure benefit most: if your attic was full of stink bugs last winter, this fall is the time to break the cycle.
Stink Bug Control — FAQ
When should I schedule stink bug treatment?
Late August to mid-September, before the first mass flights to buildings. Once they are inside the walls, treatment options are limited to cleanup and waiting for spring.
Are stink bugs harmful?
No — they do not bite, sting, or damage structures. They are purely a nuisance, though their numbers and odor make them one of the most disliked fall pests in Pennsylvania.
Will treatment keep them out permanently?
Barrier treatments dramatically reduce the number that get inside, and exclusion work seals the worst entry points. Homes near orchards, woods, and soybean fields see annual pressure and benefit from a fall treatment each year.
